You did the math again tonight and it still doesn't work.
Rent's due, the account is already lower than the bills. Maybe the job that was covering it just went away.
You're lying there running the numbers on the ceiling, doing that thing where you shuffle money around in your head that you don't actually have.
I'm not going to wave a verse at you and pretend the fear isn't real. The fear is real, the bills are real. A tight month is heavy, and I won't act like it isn't.
Let me just sit next to you in it for a minute and show you something steadier than the numbers.
Why does a low balance make a grown adult feel like a scared kid again?
Watch a child in the back seat on a long drive.
That kid isn't lying awake doing math on the gas tank. Not once does she lean up front to ask whether there's enough fuel to get home, or whether dinner's handled when they pull in.
She just looks out the window, because somebody she trusts is up there driving, and that same somebody is the one who fills the fridge when they get home.
The provision was never her job. She just gets to ride.
Somewhere along the way you climbed out of the back seat and tried to drive the whole thing yourself, and it's been crushing you ever since.
You weren't anxious because the tank was empty. You were anxious because you forgot Who's driving.
Listen to how Jesus talks to people who are scared about exactly this:
"Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?"
Matthew 6:31 (KJV)
He's naming the very things people panic about when money's short. What you'll eat, what you'll put on your back.
He doesn't shame you for needing them either. He just points you back to the One in the front seat.
"For after all these things do the Gentiles seek: for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things."
Matthew 6:32 (KJV)
Your Father knows. He's not up in heaven surprised that you have to eat. He knew about this month before you did.
Then He tells you exactly where to aim first:
"But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you."
Matthew 6:33 (KJV)
He doesn't say chase the money first and squeeze God in after. He says put Him first, and trust the One driving to handle what gets added in the back.
Let me be straight with you about what this is and what it isn't.
This isn't a promise that you'll be rich, or that the hard month disappears the second you pray.
That top verse says God supplies your NEED, not your every want, and He does it according to His riches, on His timing, in ways you often don't see coming.
Catch the last three words of it too. By Christ Jesus.
You only get to call God Father at all because the Son went to a cross, into a grave, and out the other side, to bring you into the family.
The same love that didn't spare His own Son to get you home is not about to forget you over a light bill.
A Father is not a machine you put faith into to get cash out the bottom. You can't shake Him for a payout.
He's a Father. Which is better, because a machine can only hand you a thing, and a Father hands you Himself right in the middle of it.
He may not drop the money on the table tonight, but He will not leave you alone at the table.
That's the provision underneath the provision. Not just bread, but the One who said He'd never leave.
Even when Jesus had nothing, no house, nowhere to lay His head, He was never once outside His Father's care. Neither are you.
1. Get back in the back seat tonight.
Out loud, hand God the thing you keep trying to solve at 11pm with money you don't have.
Tell Him He's driving and you're not, then actually try to sleep like a kid who trusts the driver.
2. Seek Him first in the morning, before you open the banking app.
Put five minutes with God ahead of the dread.
Seeking first isn't a magic trick for cash, it's where your fear gets reordered so you can think straight about the day.
3. Take the next real step without carrying the whole year.
Faith isn't doing nothing. Make the call, send in the application.
Then leave the part you can't control with the Father who already knows what you need.
Heavenly Father, the numbers don't add up and I'm scared, lying awake trying to steer a car I was never strong enough to drive.
You already knew about this month before I did, and not one part of it caught You off guard.
Tonight I'm climbing back into the back seat and letting You have the wheel.
You're my Father, not a machine I shake for a payout, so give me Yourself in the middle of this, not just the cash.
When morning comes and the bills are staring at me, get my eyes on You before they land on that account.
Stay with me right here at this table until the provision shows up.
In Jesus' beautiful name. Amen.
