Did God Love Me Before I Believed in Him?

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”
Romans 5:8 (KJV)

I watched a clip the other day of a man who asked a good question to a preacher who does apologetics: If God's love is unconditional, why does John 3:16 say we have to believe in Jesus to have everlasting life? Doesn't that sound like a condition?

The preacher told him God didn't send Jesus after we believed in Him. He sent Him before we believed.

Romans 5:8 tells us when God showed His love: Christ died for us while we were still sinners. Our belief did not persuade God to act.

The preacher brought up driving across a bridge. When you cross one, you're trusting something that was already built.

Your trust didn't build it. Believing in Jesus doesn't earn the love that sent Him.

Jesus gave His life for our sins, and we trust Him to save us because of what He's done.

John 3:16 still calls us to believe in Jesus for everlasting life. Being loved by God and receiving salvation through faith are not the same thing.

Don't turn that call to believe into a demand to make yourself worthy of God's love first. His love is why we can come to Him, even with a past we can't fix.

When You Wonder Whether He Loved You Then

When a memory of your unbelief makes you question God's love, read Romans 5:8 again. Pay attention to who we were when Christ died for us.

Were we already people who had earned His approval, or were we still sinners? Let the verse answer that memory.

If you haven't believed in Jesus, you can come to Him now without pretending your past was different. Trust that His death for your sins is enough to save you.

PRAYER

Father God, sometimes I look at who I was and struggle to believe You loved me then.

Today I trust what You showed me through Jesus rather than how worthy I feel.

Help me receive Your love without trying to earn it.

In Jesus' beautiful name we pray. Amen.
