I've sworn off something with everything in me and been right back in it before the week was out.
You know the feeling. You said never again and you meant it, maybe down on your knees with tears running down your face, and then you did it again anyway.
The thing you swore off last month is the same thing you woke up ashamed of this morning.
The man who wrote today's verse knew that pull. Paul, one of the most mature believers who ever lived, sat down and wrote "what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I." If it could happen to him, we can finally drop the lie that a real Christian isn't supposed to wrestle like this.
It took me years to understand the thing dragging you back was never really about willpower. It's about shame.
You fall, and shame leans in close and tells you that you're a fraud who's never going to change, so you might as well finish what you started. That voice doesn't pull you up out of the pit, it shoves you further down into it, which is why shame was never the brake on this cycle. It's the gas.
That's also why gritting your teeth never holds for long. Every "never again" is just one more contract you sign with yourself, and willpower signs it while shame burns it by morning, so you wake up and sign the very same paper all over again.
Listen to where Paul finally lands after all that wrestling.
"O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord."
Romans 7:24-25 (KJV)
The way out was never your willpower. It was always Jesus.
Grace isn't for the first time you fall, or the seventh. It's for the seventy-seventh too.
1. The next time you fall, run to God before you run from Him.
Shame is going to tell you to hide, and that silence right after you fall is the exact place the whole cycle reloads, so beat it there and go straight to Him.
2. Quit fighting this thing on willpower alone.
Bring the actual struggle to Jesus out loud today, because grace can't cover a secret you're still pretending you don't have.
3. Preach the gospel back to your own shame.
When that voice swears you'll never change, answer it out loud with Romans 7:25, because the One who delivers you was never going to be you in the first place.
"I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin."
Romans 7:25 (KJV)
God, I'm worn out from swearing off the same thing and waking up right back in it.
I keep believing the lie that I'm too far gone for You to even bother with.
Help me run to You in the mess instead of running from You in the shame.
Thank You that the way out was never my willpower, it was always Your Son.
Today I take the very thing I hate the most and lay it down at the cross.
In Jesus' mighty name we pray. Amen.
