Money Doesn't Change You. It Reveals You.

Money pays bills, feeds families, opens doors.
I grew up with nothing. I know what it feels like to stress about the basics.
I'm never going to look down on anyone who wants a better financial situation. That's a normal, human desire.

Money does something most people don't expect though.

It doesn't change you. It reveals you.

Read that verse carefully.
It doesn't say money is the root of all evil. It says the LOVE of money is.
The problem was never the money itself, it's what money exposes about the heart holding it.

Give a selfish man a million dollars and you get a selfish man with a million dollars.
Hand it to a generous one and the whole neighborhood eats.
The money didn't create the selfishness or the generosity. It just turned up the volume on what was already there.

Money is not a character builder. It's a character revealer.

Money just give what was inside you a microphone.

That's the part nobody warns you about.
We spend so much time praying for financial blessing without ever asking God to search our hearts first.
"God, bless me financially."
Have you ever prayed, "God, show me what money would reveal about me right now"?

That's the scarier prayer, and the honest one.

"The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."
Jeremiah 17:9-10 (KJV)

The Lord searches the heart. He knows what's in there before the money shows up.
Sometimes, in His mercy, He withholds the increase, not as punishment, because He knows what it would amplify in you right now.

That's not a curse. That's protection.

I'm not saying God keeps people poor on purpose. I'm saying God cares more about your heart than your bank account.
He works on the heart first because He knows money only magnifies what's inside.

Look at lottery winners. So many end up worse off than before they won: broken relationships, addiction, bankruptcy.
They didn't become different people when the money came. They became more of who they already were.
The money wasn't the problem. Their hearts weren't ready for the microphone.

If you're not generous with a little, a lot won't fix that. It'll just give your selfishness a bigger budget.

The reverse is true too.
Generous with a little means generous with a lot, because generosity was never about the amount. It's about the posture.

Jesus proved this with the widow's mite.

"And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he also saw a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all: For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had."
Luke 21:1-4 (KJV)

Two mites. Almost nothing by the world's standard.
Jesus said she gave more than all of them. Why? The rich gave from their excess. She gave from her everything.

That's what God looks at.
Not the number on the check, the posture of the person writing it.

Instead of asking God for more money, start asking Him to prepare your heart for whatever He gives you.
If the heart isn't ready, the money will just expose what was hiding.

Here's the gospel connection that ties it together.
Everything you have is already God's (Psalm 24:1). Your money, your career, none of it originated with you.
The question was never "how much should I give?" It's "how am I stewarding what was never mine to begin with?"

When you hold money loosely, it can't grip you.
When you see it as God's and not yours, the love of money loses its power.
You can have it without it having you.

The goal is not to avoid wealth. The goal is to hold it so loosely that it never becomes your identity.

Here's how you get your heart ready before the increase.

1. Let your bank statement tell you the truth.

If someone looked at how you spend, what would it reveal about your heart? Not what you say you value, what the statement says. If the two don't match, that's conviction, not condemnation, and conviction always leads to Jesus.

2. Be generous right now, with what you have.

Generosity was never about the amount, it's about the posture. The widow proved that with two mites. Start where your money actually is today.

3. Pray the scarier prayer.

"God, search my heart when it comes to money. Show me what increase would reveal about me right now. If something in me needs to change before the blessing comes, change it. I'd rather have a right heart with less than a corrupt heart with more."

PRAYER

Father God, I've chased money thinking it would change my life.

Your Word says it doesn't change me. It reveals me.

I'm not sure I've been ready for what it would expose.

Search my heart today. Am I generous or am I gripping? Am I a steward or am I an owner?

Everything I have is Yours. It always was.

Help me hold it loosely and give freely.

Prepare my heart for whatever You choose to give me, knowing You care more about who I'm becoming than what's in my account.

I trust You with my finances because I trust You with my life.
