You gave your life to Jesus.
You meant it with everything in you.
So why does a slammed door still put you on the ceiling? Why do you wake up swinging out of a dream, back in the worst night of your life, heart slamming, sheets soaked, like it's happening all over again?
Here's the thought that messes with you the most:
If I'm really a new creation, shouldn't all of this be gone by now? Maybe the change didn't take. Maybe I'm faking it.
When I got saved, I'd already lived that street life for 13 years and I found out real quick that being made new didn't delete the reflexes I built to survive out there. I still sat with my back to the wall. I still read a room for the threat before anything else. My spirit was brand new and my body was still in the streets.
Let me tell you what new creature actually means, because I think somebody sold you a lie about it:
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)
New creature. Not blank slate.
The verse says old things passed away, and they did. The guilt is gone, the record against you erased. The whole direction of your soul changed the day you believed. What it does not say is that your memory got wiped or your nervous system got factory reset the second you prayed.
Want to know how I know your scars don't disqualify you?
Look at Jesus after the resurrection:
He beat death and walked out of the tomb glorified, the most alive anyone has ever been.
He still had the holes in His hands.
When Thomas doubted, Jesus didn't hide the wounds. He held them out.
"Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands."
John 20:27 (KJV)
The resurrected body of Christ still carried the scars.
If the risen King kept His wounds and they became the very proof of who He is, then the marks on you are not a sign your faith failed. They're a sign you made it through something that tried to end you.
Hear the verse at the top again, because this is the part that should put air back in your lungs:
God is not standing across the room waiting for you to get it together. He is nigh to the ones with a broken heart. Nigh means near, close enough to touch.
Your trauma doesn't push Him back. It's the exact address He runs to.
I'm not going to insult you and say what happened to you was God's beautiful plan. Evil is evil, and some of what was done to you was just wrong. What I will tell you is that He is the only One who can take the wreckage and build something that helps somebody else still bleeding. The scar that used to just mean pain becomes the thing that lets you sit with another hurting person and say me too.
The new mind is real, but it comes in like the tide, not like a light switch. Every time you catch the old lie and hold it up against what God actually says, a little more of you gets retrained. That flinch gets quieter over years, not minutes. That's not slow faith. That's healing, and healing has a clock.
Here's how to walk this out today:
The startle, the body that won't stand down, that's survival wiring, not a soul that lost its salvation.
Pray about the actual night, the room it happened in, not just the leftover anxiety it drops on your day. He was already there, and He can sit in it with you without flinching Himself.
Tell a mature believer, and if the trauma is running your life, a good counselor too. You were never meant to fight your way out of the war alone.
Father God, You know the night I keep ending up back in, even when I never say it out loud.
You made me new, and I believe that, even on the mornings my body acts like it never got the news.
Thank You that You stay near the broken instead of waiting for me to stop bleeding.
Today I stop reading my scars as proof I'm a fraud.
You kept Yours. You can carry mine.
Take the memory I've been carrying alone and sit in it with me until it stops running my life.
In Jesus' name we pray. Amen
