Why Jesus Instead of Another Religion?

“And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.”
1 Corinthians 15:14 (KJV)

People ask a fair question. What makes the claim about Jesus different from another religion?

That question deserves an honest look at Christianity's central claim.

The apostle Paul says the whole faith depends on what happened after Jesus died. He starts with what he received and passed on:

"For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles. And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time."

1 Corinthians 15:3-8 (KJV)

Paul gives the claim in order. Christ died for our sins, was buried, rose again, and was seen.

He names people who saw Jesus alive. He even says that many of the more than five hundred witnesses were still living when he wrote this.

Paul isn't hiding the claim inside a private feeling that nobody can examine. He's telling the church what he believes happened and why it matters.

Paul makes the test plain: if Christ did not rise, Christian preaching and faith are empty.

Jesus gave His life for sinners and rose again. If He is alive, He's more than a teacher because He has authority over sin and death.

We can say that without mocking another religion or disrespecting the person asking.

Also, when we zoom out, we can see that all other religions teach you to do well. Christianity, however, teaches us that we can't do well enough to earn heaven.

We need a savior because we cannot get ourselves out of depression and eternal damnation. That is why we need Jesus to come and rescue us.

Here's how to investigate that claim honestly:

Read 1 Corinthians 15 from the beginning and write down exactly what Paul says happened.

Paul says the faith is empty if Christ is still dead, so ask what the living Jesus means for you if the resurrection is true.

Bring your real questions to God without pretending certainty you don't have. Ask Him to show you the truth about His Son as you keep reading the Word.

PRAYER

Lord, I don't want to believe something only because it's familiar to me.

Thank You for giving me a faith that's honest about what it rests on.

Help me read the claim about Jesus carefully and without pride.

Show me where I've treated Him like one teacher among many.

Let the truth of His death and resurrection become more than information in my mind.

Give me faith to trust the Savior who gave His life for me and left the grave.

In Jesus' mighty name we pray. Amen.
