It Feels Like the World Is Ending

These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.
John 16:33 (KJV)

Lately it feels like the world is ending, and you're not sure anymore that it's only a feeling.

The news reads like a countdown.

Your own life has its own fires going. The money. The people you love and can't fix.

You lie there at night with a low hum of dread, like everything is one bad week away from coming apart for good.

You refresh the news you know will make it worse, then brace all day for a hit you can't even name.

Is it actually all falling apart, or does it just feel that way?

Jesus said something to His closest friends the night before their whole world caved in.

He didn't hand them a promise that nothing bad would happen.

He handed them the truth instead, the one sitting up at the top of this page.

Read the middle of it again. In the world ye shall have tribulation.

He doesn't say maybe. He says shall.

He's not surprised your life is hard right now. He told you it would be.

Then catch the turn. I have overcome the world.

He didn't say I will overcome. He already did it.

Let me put it plain.

There's a difference between a plane going down and a plane hitting turbulence.

In turbulence, everything shakes. Your stomach drops, and every nerve in your body swears you're falling out of the sky.

The plane is still flying.

Your body can't tell turbulence from a crash. Everything in you swears you're going down, so you brace all day for an impact that never comes.

That's the whole problem. What you're in feels like the end and isn't.

You can trust the pilot because He already flew through the worst storm there is.

Jesus walked straight into the day the whole sky went dark. He took the full force of it into His own body, went down into a grave, and on the third day walked out.

The worst thing this world has ever done, it already did to Him, and He came out the other side.

That's the ground under "I have overcome the world."

He didn't promise you calm skies. He promised He already landed the plane.

I'm not going to tell you the shaking stops tomorrow, or that the thing you're scared of can't happen.

Some of it might. He said the world would have tribulation in it, and He wasn't lying.

What He promised is that it doesn't get the last word, because He already took the last word from it.

Here's how to hold steady while it shakes today:

1. Name the crash you're bracing for.

Say the specific thing your fear says is coming.

Naming it shrinks it from "everything" down to one thing God can actually meet you in.

2. Preach the past tense to yourself.

When the dread starts humming, say it back out loud: He has overcome. Already.

The ending is not up for grabs.

3. Do the next small, faithful thing.

You don't have to fix the whole shaking world today.

Make the call. Show up for the one person in front of you.

PRAYER

Almighty God, it feels like everything's coming apart, and I'm worn out from bracing for the crash.

Thank You that You already flew through the worst storm there is and came out the other side.

You told me straight up the world would have tribulation in it, so I'll quit acting shocked that it's hard.

The same breath You said that in, You said You already overcame it, so steady me on the days the whole thing is shaking.

When the dread starts humming tonight, remind me the plane is still flying and You already landed it.

Today I'm trading the countdown running in my head for the truth that You already won.

In the beautiful name of Jesus. Amen.
