I Want to Read the Bible but I Drown

“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
John 5:39 (KJV)

So many people think the Bible was written for smarter people.

You open it full of good intentions, and three pages in you're lost. A wall of names you can't pronounce. Rules about goats.

Then you close it feeling dumb, and a little guilty, like everybody else got a manual you never did.

The Bible sits on the shelf, and the guilt sits on you.

The problem was never that you're too dumb for it. Nobody ever told you what the book is actually for.

Jesus once said something to the most religious people alive, the guys who read the scriptures more than anyone else.

These men had the whole thing basically memorized, and He told them straight up they were missing the entire point.

They thought the reading itself was the prize. Rack up enough chapters, know enough rules, and you earn life.

They were treating a love letter like a textbook.

Go back to that verse up top and catch how it ends. They testify of me.

The Bible is a testimony. Genesis to Revelation, it's pointing you the whole time at one Person.

There's one hero running through all of it, and it's Jesus. Every book, every story, God rescuing people through His Son.

You don't have to drink the whole ocean. Nobody ever asked you to.

Find the current and follow it. Read to meet Him, not to pass a test, and the drowning stops.

God's not sitting over you with a red pen, grading how much you read. He wrote the whole thing so you could find His Son.

The one who left ninety-nine to come find the one.

The one who went to a cross for the exact person who keeps slamming the book shut, then walked out of the grave three days later so the whole thing points to a living Savior, not a dead teacher.

He's not up there disappointed you don't understand Leviticus yet.

You were never meant to master the Bible. You were meant to meet the One it's about.

You were never meant to do it alone either.

Nobody learns to swim by getting thrown in the deep end with a book about water. That's half of why people drown in this. They're handed sixty-six books and left to figure it out solo.

That's exactly why we built This devotional blog time. Somebody to hand you the thread and walk you in a step at a time, until the ocean turns into something you can actually stand up in.

Here's how to start today:

1. Don't open to a random page. Start where Jesus shows up.

Skip the genealogies for now. Open the Gospel of John or Mark and meet the hero first.

Once you know Him, the rest of the book finally has a center.

2. Read to meet Him, not to finish.

Forget how many chapters. Read a few verses and ask one question. What does this show me about who God is?

Five verses where you actually meet Him beats five chapters you drowned in.

3. Don't swim alone. Get a guide.

Let pastor walk you in, whether that's the devotional blog time with or one on one time with Me in Bible study.

PRAYER

Father God, I've wanted to know Your Word, and honestly I've felt too lost to keep going.

Thank You that You never once asked me to master it, only to meet Your Son inside it.

I've been treating it like a test I was failing, when the whole time it was a letter pointing me to Him.

Open my eyes to see Jesus on the pages, from the very first book to the last.

Lead me to the people and the help that'll actually walk me in.

Don't let me quit on this. Meet me every single time I crack it open.

In Jesus' precious name. Amen.
