Am I Bothering God When I Pray About Small Things?

“Are not five sparrows sold for two farthings, and not one of them is forgotten before God? But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows.”
Luke 12:6-7 (KJV)

We can feel guilty asking God about a small problem when somebody else is praying for a miracle.

Many of us only pray when the problem feels big enough. We bring God the emergencies, and when it comes to an ordinary decision we think, "God has more important people to help."

Jesus never talks about the Father's attention that way.

In Luke 12 He tells His disciples not to be afraid of people who can kill the body, and then He points to sparrows sold in the market and says not one of them is forgotten before God. Then He tells them, "even the very hairs of your head are all numbered."

A farthing was a small coin. Those birds were worth almost nothing to the men selling them, and the Father still didn't forget a single one.

He isn't saying God checks in on you once your situation gets serious enough. He's saying God is already counting things about you that you have never bothered to count yourself.

If God doesn't forget one sparrow that nobody in that market valued, He isn't going to overlook what's happening in your life.

In fact, small prayers teach us to depend on Him before the crisis comes. We learn to walk with God ahead of the emergency. We stop dividing life into the parts He cares about and the parts we figure we have to manage alone.

You can ask Him about the ordinary thing. An ordinary prayer doesn't waste God's time, and it isn't pulling His care away from the person next to you.

The same Jesus who knows the number of hairs on your head is the reason you get to walk in and talk to God at all.

Here's how to bring God into the ordinary:

1. Speak plainly

Tell God what you need without making the request sound more spiritual than it is. A short, honest prayer is still prayer.

2. Bring the feeling back to His Word

When you feel like a burden, read Luke 12:6-7 again. Your feeling says God is too busy, and Jesus says you aren't forgotten.

3. Thank Him for one ordinary thing

Notice one ordinary provision today and thank God for it out loud. That gratitude reminds us we aren't managing life by ourselves.

PRAYER

Father God, I often wait until life feels serious before I speak to You.

I've acted like my ordinary needs are beneath Your attention.

Thank You for knowing me down to the hairs on my head. Help me believe what Jesus said when my feelings tell me I am bothering You.

Keep me from deciding for You which parts of my life are worth Your time. Teach me to ask honestly and to receive Your daily care with gratitude.

Thank You for bringing me close through Jesus.

In Jesus' precious name we pray. Amen.
